Snow Report: Whistler Blackcomb, BC

November 25, 2008 was the first day Whistler Mountain opened for the 2008-2009 season, and Blackcomb mountain followed on the 26th.

Conditions ranged from "iffy" to epic, depending on how far away you chose to venture from the officially opened trails.
The peak was not open, and neither was the base (on either mountain).

The mid mountain offered several groomed runs, which quickly became overcrowded as the holiday week went on. Much of the snow on the mid mountain was man-made, but the mountain received a decent amount of fresh powder on Friday (more expected for the week of Dec 1, 2008).

The real way to experience the mountain (and the quickest way to damage your equipment) is to enter the "closed" portions of the mountains and ski the trails which have not officially opened yet for the season. These portions offered incredible powder, completely untracked runs, and many obstacles. Boulders and tree tops were abound, along with moderately-covered wooden bridges with running water beneath. Scary in some places, but amazing skiing/boarding if you're cautious.

The Peak-to-Peak lift was not operating, but they were testing some of the gondolas in anticipation for it's December 12th opening.

The village was relatively quiet, and the best hot wing joint (Amsterdam Cafe) was closed for renovations.
Early season rates are in effect( ~$57), and if you bring your Warren Miller coupon you get "buy one -get one free" on lift tickets. (regular season rates have gone up to $81 CAD)

Baker is set to open this week, and the season is shaping up!
